Tanya Majmudar

Tanya Majmudar joined Kalpavriksh in 2014 and has taken on multiple roles within the organisation, including Programme Lead on Community Conserved Areas, South Asia Regional Coordinator for the ICCA Consortium, and Co-lead for Children’s Publications and Environmental Education.

Her work in the Conservation & Livelihoods theme focuses on strengthening how knowledge on community-led conservation is documented, shared, and used. She has led the design and development of an open-data GIS platform on Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) across India, including developing research frameworks, coordinating large-scale documentation (1100+ case studies), and working closely with communities, researchers, and technology teams to ensure accessibility and data quality.

Tanya has played a key role in multi-dimensional conservation initiatives, particularly in Nagaland, contributing to project visioning, planning, and implementation. She has also supported capacity building in community self-documentation and contributed to strengthening networks of community institutions.

As part of ICCA Consortium, of which Kalpavriksh has been the South Asia Secretariat, she has helped plan and facilitate regional and national assemblies, bringing together community representatives, practitioners, and researchers to engage with issues of equity, livelihoods, and global biodiversity frameworks.

In addition to her conservation work, Tanya co-founded an award-winning children’s publishing programme on nature and wildlife, where she curates, edits, and writes books, and collaborates with illustrators and educators. She has also worked with grassroots organisations to develop localised environmental education material.

Her interests lie in building bridges between knowledge, practice, and communities, and in fostering collaborations that support more grounded and inclusive conservation efforts.
