Fr. Thomas Kocherry, one of India's most active defenders of the rights of artisanal fisherfolk and the conservation of the coasts and seas, passed away on 3rd May. Tom was a long-time leader in the National Fishworkers' Forum, and active in many other peoples' movements on environment and social justice at national and international levels. Kalpavriksh expresses its deep shock, and condolences to Tom's family and friends.

Sunil Bhai jpg 1856157eKalpavriksh members are shocked to hear of the passing away of Sunilbhai of the Samajwadi Jan Parishad in Madhya Pradesh on the night of April 21 2014, and would like to express deep condolences to his family and friends. Sunilbhai worked selflessly for community rights, and was an innovative activist who forged institutions like the Tawa fishers cooperative and others. Kalpavriksh and Sunilbhai were in touch for a few years on the issue of the rights of people affected by protected areas like Satpura Tiger Reserve.

Himalayan Ark and the Mesar Forest Fair invite you to Himal Kalasutra Bird Festival 2014

in collaboration with The Community of Sarmoli & Shankhdhura, Himal Prakriti, Trust for Nature, Maati Women's Collective, Jungli School, Munsiari, and Kalpavriksh. Birdwatching, photography, weaving, stories, art....a basket of activities spread over a week, and ending in a unique Forest Festival.

Bindia Thapar, artist and illustrator, who brought alive dozens of books for children and adults with her wonderful and evocative drawings, passed away this morning, April 19 2014, after a long struggle with cancer. Bindia created the evocative illustrations used in Kalpavriksh's publication of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan final report and summary, some of them now used on our website and on our recent t-shirts. Kalpavriksh members express heartfelt condolences to Bindia's family and friends.
